Ventura County Rose Society
Board Meeting
April 27, 2006

Minutes of Meeting

A meeting of the Ventura County Rose Society’s Board of Directors was called to order by its President, Linda Banner-Bacin, in the Cowan Center at 5.40 p.m. on April 27, 2006. Those present were: Linda Banner-Bacin, President; Lynette Buchanan-Roth, Vice President; Paddy Ruzella Secretary; Jim Delahanty, Immediate Past President; Directors at Large, Jane Delahanty, Pat Moomey (Program Chair), Janet Sklar (Publicity Chair), Ken Kerr; and ex-officio member, Cindy Mastro (Raffle Chair). Absent: Earl Holst, Treasurer.

Newsletter Editor: The first order of business was the search for a newsletter editor. The current editor, Jim Delahanty, will be retiring from the position with the upcoming May/June edition of “The Ventura Rose.” To date no one has stepped forward to fill the position. There was considerable discussion on this subject and four options were offered:

  1. Explore the possibility of having an outside firm publish the newsletter with members providing copy only. Paddy Ruzella will look for such a firm.

  2. Offer a monthly stipend of $100 plus free membership perks to anyone willing to edit and publish the newsletter. Linda will make this announcement at the meeting and insert the offer in the May/June newsletter. Jim Delahanty will offer the position first to Brian Keele who presently publishes the newsletter. If he is unable or unwilling to take the position, the search will continue elsewhere.

  3. Publish the newsletter on line quarterly and mail only to those with no e-mail capabilities. Possibly print off some copies for pick up at meetings by those with no e-mail options.

  4. In the event the newsletter has to be abandoned for lack of an editor, a flyer will be produced and mailed to all members which will make them aware of meetings and important matters.

Meeting Location: It was confirmed that the Cowan Center will be available to the Society through June of 2007. Thereafter a new meeting site will have to be found. The search continues for such a venue.

Library Cart: It was felt that the present arrangement for storing our library books was inadequate and Janet Sklar offered to locate a library catalog and see if a locking rolling cart might be feasible.

Budget: It was confirmed that the Budget for the 2006 year had been approved by the Board of Directors and membership.

Summer Social: A pot-luck type summer social will be held at the home of Pat Moomey in Camarillo on August 12th from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Rose Tour of Ventura: This is being put together by Linda Banner-Bacin and Paddy Ruzella. Details will be forthcoming but the tour is scheduled for June 3rd. Meet at K-Mart on Victoria Avenue along north wall for car pooling. No host lunch will take place after the tour at a downtown restaurant, possibly Nona’s Courtyard Café.

Other Business: Jim Delahanty made a motion that the Board of Directors, on behalf of the Ventura County Rose Society, endorse Bob Martin in his bid to be Vice President of the American Rose Society for the next year. The motion was duly seconded and passed unanimously.

Next Meeting: The next meeting of the Board will take place on May 25th at 5.15 p.m. at the Camarillo Soup Plantation, 375 West Ventura Boulevard, near the Home Depot Store.

There being no further business the President adjourned the meeting at 6.45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Paddy Ruzella, Secretary
