Board of Directors Meeting
May 19, 2004 6:30 P.M.
Present for meeting; Dawn-Marie Johnson, Jim & Jane Delahanty, Ingrid Walpelhorst, Bryan Keele, Arden & Earl Holst, Barbara Morse, & Cindy Mastro.
Old Business:
- Dawn –Marie read the minutes from the last meeting on March 03,2004
- Treasurers Report- Earl Holst reviewed his report. We have a cash balance of $7,960.16
New Business:
- Membership/Welcome Table- Discussed calling non-renewed members personally to see if they would like to renew. Barbara volunteered & Bryan will send her a list. Let CR’S & Board know of the new members so they may greet them. Joann Moretini is CR for May’s meeting.
- News letter- Brian Keele: Were sending stamped mail instead of bulk mail, Jim suggested we offer members a choice of receiving newsletter by snail mail or online. Olives Adobe is not a VCRS garden; we are committed to maintain the Stagecoach Garden.
- Stagecoach Inn- May 23rd workday spreading compost Tringali Rose is not doing well. We need to try more cuttings.
- Members Garden Tour- Linda Banner Bacin chair: Only two people volunteered to host a tour. She suggested we cancel for this year. Dawn-Marie suggested we have a fall garden tour, possibly on a Sunday. Will explore a member’s tour to Descanso or public garden in fall with a spring home garden tour. Bell Story or Santa Barbra Mission were suggested. Jim suggested a committee be formed to investigate. Linda volunteered to head the committee along with Dawn-Marie, Ingrid & Cindy.
- Printing of Good to Grow Roses- Ingrid Walpelhorst printed 600-700 costing $285.00. 200+ brochures are left. Hospice tour, Green Thumb, some advertisers & CR’s want copies.
- Consulting Rosarian Report- Jim Delahanty: ARS Convention. Learned about soil analysis & given recipes for soil conditioning, formulas for insecticides & organics. Jim Delahanty: “Ask a CR” spammers discovered CR website & has received tons of letters. Asked to discontinue due to spam, until we can get a spam filter. Unanimous Agreement. Dawn – Marie requested a website update. Jim will ask Penni to do update. Community Outreach: Dawn-Marie reported on Hospice garden tour, & requested volunteers.
- Rose Auction 2005- Chairman Jim Delahanty reported on the need to train an auctioneer, publicity & logistics on 2005 auction in preparation / take over of 2006 auction. Auction is a critical fundraiser for VCRS, Discussed ways to delegate auction chair duties. Jim starts preparing in June for Jan auction. VCRS niche is old & unusual roses, which bring in the most money. We lost money on Jackson & Perkins roses. Ashdown & Edmonds want to continue donations for auction. Jim suggested that we move the auction for Thursday to Saturday, the vote was Unanimous
- Chair Positions Reviewed- CR Liaison: Jim Delahanty / Dawn-Marie Johnson share duties. Need to put article in newsletter explaining chair duties & positions in December. Rose Auction: Jim Delahanty / Sue Munday. Rose Show & Celebration- 0 Events- 0. Tours: Linda Banner Bacin. 2005 Fundraising Garden Tour- 0. Publicity- Ingrid

- Rose Show / Celebration 2004- Discussed possible date not competing with other rose events & the need for chairs. Reviewed letter from Lynn Snetsinger regarding our rose show schedule. All agreed to send a letter to Lynn, that at this time we will not be having a rose show in 2004. Dawn-Marie gave several suggestions for a Rose Show / Celebration in 2005, including a combination show & celebration with Fair Friends.
